Description

Slow growing moderately hardy Wheki-ponga is a medium-sized tree fern with stout red-brown trunk growing to 2.5 – 6m height. Dead fronds create a cone-shaped crown. Found in both lowland and hill sites up to 800m, southwards from Central North Island. Forms sub-canopy in tall forest. Enjoys alluvial and moist volcanic soils with warm summer temperatures, but does well on a range of soils. Shade and sun tolerant. Moderately frost, wind, and drought tolerant. Slower growth allows potential positioning indoors or in patio gardens.
