Large evergreen coastal shrub with steady growth to 3m within 10 years and up to a maximum 5m. The leaves are long, leathery upright and a glossy dark green with distinctly deep purple caste and orange mid-rib aimed at the ground from upright branches. Prefers sunny to partially shaded position and will tolerate strong wind and minor drought. Will not withstand hard frost. Dioecieous. Sabre habitat is from Poverty Bay, north. Prefers well-drained fertile soils. Excellent specimen for narrow sites but also makes attractive hedging requiring little pruning.
